Westwood Unidos Celebrates La Casita Grand Opening
March 2, 2016 – Located alongside Morrison road sits La Casita, its bright orange facade making it unmistakable to passersby. And after Wednesday’s grand opening ceremony, it is highly unlikely to be passed over very often.
La Casita is Westwood’s new community center, and will offer a wide variety of classes that community members choose to share. They range from yoga to zumba to tutoring. La Casita will also host movie nights, lectures and any other events the community deems worthwhile.
Community Connectors within Westwood Unidos worked with the local community to decide what their needs were, and how to best meet those needs.
“La Casita is a great heart in this neighborhood, created from the great work of Westwood Unidos,” said Rachel Cleaves, a leader with Westwood Unidos. “Through the work of our community connectors, we heard you wanted to support your neighborhood and share you gifts. Now we have a place.”
The grand opening was held at La Casita, and attracted more than 100 guests. Local neighborhood residents provided the food, and some of the exercise classes were demonstrated as well. In attendance for the ribbon cutting ceremony was Mayor Michael B. Hancock, Councilman Paul Lopez, the Denver Office of Economic Development and Healthy Places Westwood who helped fund the project, community stakeholders including Re:Vision who is leasing La Casita to Westwood Unidos and of course many residents who are looking forward to the many classes that will be offered.
“I am proud of this wonderful facility you are opening today,” Mayor Hancock said. “The Westwood community has worked so hard to make today possible. Westwood Unidos has now brought healthy opportunities closer to home, this is now the crown jewel in the crown of the Westwood community.”
All ages are welcome at La Casita, which has officially commenced the start of 13 different classes. All classes are based on a suggested donation only, and attendees will not be charged at the door.
