ULC Staff and Board Mourn Lives Lost in Pittsburgh
The tragedy that took place at the Tree of Life Synagogue this past weekend weighs heavily on the staff and Board of Urban Land Conservancy. Our thoughts are with those directly affected by this horrible event driven by hate. We have incredible partners and colleagues in Pennsylvania, and our hearts are with them and the people of Pittsburgh and the Squirrel Hill neighborhood.
Our community focused work is based on creating healthy, vibrant and inclusive places where people live, work and play. This kind of place-based success depends on diverse communities that include individuals and families that represent different races, income levels, orientations and religious practices. ULC continues to support the success of all people living in our region through the preservation and development of community beneficial real estate, acts of hate will not skew our mission.
In today’s environment, too many individuals and families experience fear as they go out into their communities every day. This includes families sending their child to school, undocumented residents going to work and people choosing to practice their religion in what should be a safe place.
We must not let fear take away our belief in community and the people and places we count on for education, opportunity, hope and faith.
As Rabbit Hillel stated over 2,000 years ago, “If I am not for myself, who is for me? And being for my own self, what am ‘I’? And if not now, when?”
