Machebeuf Hall at Loretto Heights
The redevelopment of the former university campus in southwest Denver began with an inclusive neighborhood planning effort. Plans called for access to opportunity, reducing vulnerability to displacement, and expanding housing and jobs diversity. In 2022, ULC purchased land at Loretto Heights that included the 40,000-SF Machebeuf Hall, and a small structure known as the Arts Building. ULC first leased and then sold Machebeuf Hall to the southwest Denver nonprofit Commún, which operates it as a community center for healthy food access, job training and more. The land beneath Machebeuf Hall remains in ULC’s community land trust, ensuring the property delivers a community-serving use for 99 years or more.
This space will allow us to expand our programming and services. We have goals to grow our mental health programming, job training, community organizing and our donation-based grocery store. There is also a commercial kitchen, so we plan to offer a small, food-business incubator and a job-training coffee shop for teenagers.
